Yog's Notebook
Submission Guidelines
Attention: we are not currently reviewing submissions. Please see our blog for updates.
The editors of Yog's Notebook are looking for sf/fantasy/horror short stories and flash fiction about what happens when people encounter the unexpected. We like nanotech, space travel, urban mythology, alien civilizations, and things that go bump in the night. We can do without flat, stereotyped characters, and stories that leave us scratching our head trying to follow the plot. We like sharp dialogue and writing that shows at least a bit of a sense of humor.
We pay $20 for stories between 1000-6000 words in length, and $10 for fiction under 1000 words. We'll select 5-6 stories per issue.
Please submit only one story at a time, and query first before sending previously published work. No simultaneous submissions.
Yog's Notebook is published quarterly in March, June, September, and December. We read and accept work on an ongoing basis.
Requirements for email submissions:
Send an email to yogsnotebook@gmail.com with the following:
Title: Story submission: [your story name here]
Body:
- Your full name (the real legal one, so we'll know who to pay)
- Mailing address
- Email address
- Any other relevant contact info
- The approximate word count. We will not consider stories longer than 6000 words.
- The story title, and byline if different from the full name above.
- The full text of the story in plain-text format. No HTML. No attachments. Use blank lines between paragraphs. Use underscores (like this: _word_) to show emphasis. Bad formatting makes Yog cry.

- The story, formatted as follows: white paper, printed on a single side, double-spaced, in a readable font (Courier, 10 or 12 point), with 1" margins on all sides. If you follow the directions here we'll be very happy.
- A return envelope with sufficient postage (or substitute an International Reply Coupon for postage if you live outside the US).
- We are unable to return manuscripts or send a response without this.
- If you don't want your manuscript back, note this in your cover letter and send a business-size SASE.
- If you'd like to receive a response via email, we recommend that you send the submission according to our email guidelines, which are described above.
Print submissions should be mailed to Yog's Notebook, PO Box 40626, Portland OR, 97240.
Stories that do not meet these guidelines will be automatically rejected.
